Private rescue groups play a vital role in finding the right homes for animals in need. Some rescue groups have shelter spaces, but many don't and must depend on volunteers to help care for and foster dogs in their homes.
Expect a responsible rescue organization to ask about your reasons for wanting a pet, how much time you will spend with your animal, what kind of home you live in, if you have children etc. The animal you are adopting has already lost one home (and sometimes more than one), rescue groups want to do everything they can to insure a good match between you and the animal you adopt.
Rescue groups charge an adoption fee to help cover some of the cost of caring for their animals, this includes:
Adoption fees for rescued pets rarely cover the actual cost to the rescue group of caring for the animal. If you adopt through a shelter the cost of maintaining an animal until they are adopted is never covered by the fee.
If you believe that the rescue group or shelter you have adopted your pet from is doing a great job, please support them in anyway you can. Contributions (even modest ones) of money and supplies and volunteer time are always appreciated and more meaningful than you might imagine.
